Description
Numbers 1, 1A, and 3-11 (odd) Portland Street form a terrace of seven cottages built around 1903-1914 as part of an estate developed under the direction of Octavia Hill for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and built by Cluttons. The cottages are constructed of yellow brick with red-brick detailing, a red-tiled roof with a red-brick stepped cornice, and a stuccoed plinth. They are two storeys in height, with two bays per cottage, designed in a cottage style. Numbers 1, 1A, and 11 feature plaster gables extending the full width of the houses. Each cottage has mostly paired doorways sheltered by tiled canopies supported by wooden braces; the doors have been replaced, but retain oblong fanlights above. The sash windows have glazing bars, bracketed sills, and are set within cambered, gauged red brick arches. Red brick sill bands are present. The interior has not been inspected. Associated area railings with spearhead standards are also part of the listing. The terrace has group value with Aycliffe House to the south and with numbers 13-23 Portland Street to the north, both also designated as Grade II listed buildings.
