Description

The Club Boathouse and Premises on the foreshore at Royal Victoria Yard, built between 1781 and 1798, consists of two large warehouse buildings that face north towards the river. The inner returns of these buildings and three bays of the main fronts were previously the Commandant's House and the Administrative Offices. The symmetrical main fronts feature slightly projecting outer sections under gables with lunettes, followed by a seven-bay flush main section.

Both buildings are three storeys tall, with arched ground floors that open in front, providing a covered walkway to the entrances. They are constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with a stone band at the first floor, a cornice band, and a stone-coped parapet. There is a stone impost band at the ground floor, and the sash windows with glazing bars are topped with segmental brick arches. French windows, which have wrought iron guards, have replaced the loading doors at the centres of the sections.

The taller inner wings also rise three storeys and include a basement, featuring three windows in a large canted bay. A stone cornice band runs below the parapet, with a moulded cornice at the second floor level and a ground floor band. The sash windows have gauged flat brick arches, although some glazing bars are missing. The entrances are located on the five-bay inner returns, where the outer windows are blocked. The entrance terrace to the slightly projecting central bay has a double flight of steps with a wrought iron handrail. The doors consist of six fielded panels within a moulded architrave, topped by a patterned rectangular fanlight and a wide console-bracketed cornice and pediment that cover narrow flanking windows.
