Description
The Hatcham Liberal Club, located at No.369 Queens Road, dates to around 1880 and is built in a Queen Anne Dutch style. Constructed primarily of yellow brick, the front facade is of red brick with ceramic dressings and a pantiled roof punctuated by five tall brick chimney stacks. The building extends over three storeys, with attics and basements. It features three windows, two Dutch gables with circular windows in the attics, and paired sash windows to the second floor. Below these are three-storey canted bays, each with decorated pediments, panels, and rubbed brick aprons. A central second-floor window has a curved oriel with a decorated ceramic base. The first floor incorporates a cambered opening with a keystone, a balcony, and a French window. A central porch features a decorated pediment bearing a shield inscribed with "EST. 1880," supported by two partly fluted Tuscan columns on brick piers, and it contains a five-panelled door with a cambered fanlight. An attached wall features two chamfered gate piers and cast iron railings with scrolled detailing.
Inside, the Entrance Hall has tiled walls with round-headed panels and three doorcases featuring eared architraves, one with a brass plaque commemorating G Rhodes, Secretary from 1902-1927. The staircase has metal balustrading, a mahogany handrail, and tiled dado panelling. Both the Committee Room and Meeting Room retain tiled dado panelling and original fireplaces.
