Description
23 to 27 Tranquil Vale is a group of three buildings from the early to mid-18th century, located on the south-west side of Tranquil Vale.
Number 23 has been altered and features two storeys, an attic, and a sunk basement with three windows. It has a rounded mansard roof that has been renewed with machine tiles, including one square dormer and a later small dormer. The front is finished in stucco with a parapet. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are renewed and set in near-flush box frames. The first-floor windows are adorned with moulded round architraves that have headstops. The ground floor features a later 19th-century arcaded shop front with chevron mouldings on the arches, and there is a balcony above with a stuccoed balustrade.
Numbers 25 and 27 are also early to mid-18th century with some alterations. They have three storeys and a total of six windows. The stuccoed front has a parapet that conceals the roof. The second-floor sash windows have glazing bars, with number 25 being recessed and number 27 near-flush. The first-floor sash windows also have moulded architraves, and the left window of number 27 is blank, featuring a painted legend that reads "VALE HOUSE." Number 25 includes a late 19th-century shop front with altered glazing and cast iron grille stall risers, while number 27 has a heavy Doric porch with a modern door beneath a radial fanlight in the left bay, and a modern shop front on the right.
These buildings, along with numbers 3 to 35, form a cohesive group.
