Description

The Lewisham War Memorial, located in Memorial Gardens, is a Grade II listed structure made of Portland stone. It features a tapered Classical obelisk with fluting and a Latin cross in relief on each of its four sides. The obelisk stands on a square plinth that has a stone plaque on its west front, facing the High Street. This plaque is adorned with the Borough of Lewisham's Arms and is inscribed with the words: IN MEMORY OF/ ALL LEWISHAM/ PEOPLE/ WHO LOST/ THEIR LIVES/ 1914-1918/ AND/ 1939-1945.

The foundation stone bears the inscription: THIS STONE WAS LAID BY/ HARRY CHIESMAN/ JP MBE/ MAYOR OF LEWISHAM/ NOVEMBER 6TH 1920.

The memorial is set on a three-stepped octagonal base, centrally located within a circular paved area. Flanking the entrance from the High Street are two smaller stone obelisks, each inscribed on their front faces with: THESE PIERS/ WERE ERECTED/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE OFFICERS/ AND MEN OF THE/ 11TH LEWISHAM BATTALION,/ ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT,/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. Each obelisk features the regimental badge in relief at the top and is topped with a bronze base that once held a bronze lamp.

The circular paved area and the path leading to the High Street, bordered by the obelisks, were all part of the original design and are integral to the memorial.
