Description
Thackeray's Almshouses, built in 1840, is a two-storey building featuring six windows. It has a high-pitched tiled roof with cross-gables at each end, which are adorned with groups of diagonal chimney shafts. The structure is made of multicoloured stock brick and has a parapet with rounded brick dentils that extend over the gable ends. The round-headed openings are framed by gauged red brick arches, and the first floor has paired windows set in chamfered reveals within double recesses. In the center, there is a carved stone depiction of the Thackeray family arms, accompanied by a stone label below that bears the inscription: "Built and endowed 1840 for Six Aged Females by John Thackeray of The Priory, Lewisham, who died on the 13th day of May 1851." The ground floor features a pattern of alternating windows and doors, with paired doors located centrally beneath a wide round arch that has chevron moulding.
