Description

St Mary's Redemptorist Monastery is a late 19th-century building designed by Bentley in the Art and Craft Gothic style. It is L-shaped, with a shorter arm connected to the Church of St Mary and a longer arm along the south side of the courtyard, facing St Alphonsus Road, which includes a western extension. The courtyard front is three stories tall, constructed from red brick with stone dressings. It features a high-pitched slated roof with hipped, gabled dormers. At the south corner, there is a battered bell turret topped with a low cupola.

The second floor has elliptical arcading divided by lesenes on corbels. The first-floor windows are set in pointed arches with feet, while the ground floor has paired windows with flattened ogee heads under pointed relieving arches, accented by bands of brick and stone in the tympana. A large four-centred entrance arch is topped with a stone hoodmould. The design of the shorter arm is similar but has the first and second floors reversed, with the ground floor recessed behind a Tudor arched cloister.

The outer front is slightly concave and irregular, with the eastern section comprising five narrow bays separated by broad upper buttresses and corbelled arcading below the eaves. This is followed by higher sections with four and three bays, and a western two-storey, two-bay end. The fenestration is varied but maintains similar designs to the courtyard front, with two large windows in the third section suggesting a chapel.
