Description
The Clergy House and Archbishop's House is a residential building for cathedral clergy, constructed between 1895 and around 1902 by Bentley. It features red brick with Portland stone dressings and a green slate roof. The structure has two storeys, a semi-basement, an attic, and an attic mansard.
The façade consists of six main bays, with the left bay featuring a five-storey tower-like projection topped with a low pyramidal roof. The other bays display an almost symmetrical design, highlighted by a central projecting porch supported by gothic columns and a barrel roof. The outer bays contain three windows each, while the inner bays have paired windows with unifying thermal windows above. The windows are square-headed sashes with glazing bars and segmental reveals above, with the first-floor windows having architraves. A wrought-iron balcony spans the centre three bays on the first floor, and a cornice runs above this level. Pilaster strips are present between the attic windows, and the original wrought-iron railings are intact. There is also a return façade to the left.
The interiors have not been inspected. This building forms a group with the Diocesan Hall and The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of the Most Precious Blood, both located in Ashley Gardens.
