Description
The former magistrates' court, built between 1903 and 1904, was designed by John Dixon Butler for the Metropolitan Police. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings in a Free Baroque style. The building has three storeys plus an attic and is five bays wide, featuring four stacks and four dormer windows. The central bay is recessed and highlighted by a segmental-headed pediment, which includes a stone canted bay window that extends from the attic to the first floor. This central bay is flanked by two bays that are vertically linked with stone dressing. The first and second storeys have flat arched windows with sash windows, and the first storey windows are topped with segmental moulded hoods. A stone balustrade and modillion cornice run along the top, continuing along the flank walls. The ground storey is rusticated stone, with a central recessed entrance. Above the entrance is a flat, horizontal stone porch supported by paired elongated brackets, featuring the stone Royal Coat of Arms. The entrance doorway, which is now blocked, is flanked by a pair of round-headed windows.
Inside, the building has been significantly remodeled due to bomb damage, but it retains a simple staircase with chamfered newels. The former magistrates' court is included for its group value.
