Description
The Friary of St Francis is a Franciscan friary located on Francis Street in the City of Westminster. It was built in the mid-19th century and features yellow brick, which is painted at the ground floor. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and it is seven windows wide, designed in a free early Renaissance style.
The ground floor is recessed behind a round-arched arcade, which includes simplified capitals and drum piers, with paterae in the spandrels. The central entrance is arched, while the windows on the first and second floors are round-headed and arranged in pairs, with shared gauged work that rises to a point between them. There is a brick band above the second floor, and a corbel table at the eaves with triplet windows at intervals. To the left, there is a full-height canted bay. A bronze figure of St Francis is set at first floor level on the corner of the facade.
