Description
The Clock Tower, located on Clapham High Street in Lambeth, was built as a gift to the people of Clapham by Alexander Glegg, who served as mayor from 1905 to 1906. The architect for the tower was Ewart Gladstone Millar, and the clock, which does not strike, was made by Gillett and Johnston of Croydon. The structure is made of Portland stone and features a grey polished Aberdeen granite base. It stands 31 feet tall and has a square plan. The plinth includes a bronze panelled door that provides access to the winding mechanism. Above this, the stem of the tower displays banded rustication and large quoins, along with projecting cornices and a clock set within a frieze. The top of the tower is adorned with a voluted top-knot and a ball finial. The Clock Tower is noted as a local landmark and is recognized for its strong, yet contrasting, group value with the listed rotunda of the nearby Underground station.
