Description

The tomb of Demetrios Cassavetes and family is located in the Greek Burial Ground at West Norwood Memorial Park. This chest tomb, designed in the early 20th century by an unknown designer, is made of stone and features a stepped rectangular base with carved decorations. The chest itself has carved figurative relief panels on its long sides and inscribed ends. It is topped with a pitched roof that includes antefixae at the pediments. A life-size sculptured figure of a distraught female, dressed in classical robes and leaning across the tomb with her head supported by her right hand, adds a poignant touch. This figure represents Maria Cassavetes, who died in 1914 and later became Mrs. Maria Zambaco. She was a notable pre-Raphaelite artist and medallist, known for her relationships with prominent artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, both of whom created portraits of her.
