TQ3272 (OFF) NORWOOD ROAD 963-0/32/1151 (East side) West Norwood Memorial Park Tomb of Demetrios Cassavetes & family in the Greek Burial Ground

Chest tomb with sculptured leaning figure. Early C20, designer unknown. Stone. Stepped rectangular base with carved enrichment. Battered chest with carved figurative relief panels to long sides and inscribed ends. Pitched roof with antefixae to pediments. Leaning across the tomb, a life-size sculptured distraught female in classical robes, her head supported by right hand. Maria Cassavetes, (d. 1914), later Mrs. Maria Zambaco, was a prominent pre-Raphaelite, being an artist and medallist in her own right as well as girlfriend of Rossetti and then Burne-Jones, both of whom made portraits of her.
