Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of six houses, numbered 39 to 46, located on the south side of Grafton Square. It is one of the larger groups within the square's overall design. Each house is four storeys high with a basement, and features two windows, with the end houses having a window recessed within a set-back entrance bay. The houses are constructed of stucco, with a banded, rusticated basement. The basement cornice, which sits level with the door and window cornices, supports two-storey pilasters that rise to a main frieze featuring an ornate, floral guilloche moulding topped with a cornice. A short attic storey has pilasters to the frieze, a cornice supported by paired brackets, and a parapet with decorative openwork sections. The windows are sash windows; the two upper floors have tripartite windows in moulded architraves, while the lower windows have raised sunflower-stem borders with floral ornamentation. Console brackets support cornices above the windows, with pediments above the ground floor windows and cast iron railings below. Nine steps with balustrades lead to four-panel doors, each with a rectangular fanlight, set back behind modified entablature surrounds.
