Description
Number 16 on Old Town in Clapham dates from around 1800, although it may have an older core. This building is three storeys tall with a basement and features three windows. It is constructed of stock brick and has a stone-coped parapet with a slated roof and end chimneys. The sash windows have gauged flat brick arches and glazing bars set in near-flush box frames. The left side of the building has a three-bay return with an entrance that is accessed by five steps leading up to a half-glazed door. This door is framed by a classical surround that includes pilasters with decorative capitals, a cornice, and a patterned radial fanlight, all set within a stucco-lined reveal under a round gauged brick arch that has key and impost blocks. Above the door, there is an elliptical-headed window with a moulded wood architrave and keystone, also set within a gauged brick arch, topped by a lunette with radial glazing. The steps are complemented by a graceful curved handrail.
