Description

The Church of St Peter, located on Prescott Place, was built in 1878 by J E K Cutts and is designed in a style reminiscent of Butterfield. The building is simple yet massive, featuring structural polychromy. It is constructed of stock brick with dressings of red brick and stone, topped with high-pitched slated roofs. The church has a tall nave with aisles and an aisled chancel that is almost as tall as the nave, along with lower transepts and a bell cote at the crossing. There are north and south porches, and the design includes elements from the 13th century, such as lancet windows that are either single or grouped, and wheel windows at the ends. The exterior showcases banding and patterned brickwork, with emphasized patterns around the windows and doors. Inside, the nave retains its polychrome decoration, while the aisles have been whitened. The interior features a four-bay arcade with alternate compound and octagonal piers, and a timber roof. There are good iron screens, likely added later, as well as a font, pulpit, and east windows designed by Kempe.
