Description

This is a substantial mid-19th century terrace, forming the largest section of Grafton Square. The terrace comprises numbers 29 to 38 and each house is of four storeys with a basement, featuring a two-window arrangement. The facades are rendered in stucco, with a banded and rusticated basement and ground floor extending up to the level of the door and window cornices. Pilasters support a decorative, guilloche-moulded frieze and cornice. Further, shorter pilasters above support a top frieze, cornice, and a parapet with openwork detailing. Moulded brackets are evenly spaced along the cornice. The windows are paired or tripartite, with horizontal bars, with the second and third floors framed by moulded architraves, and the ground and first floors featuring raised borders of sunflower stems with floral angle ornaments (some of which are missing). Console brackets support the cornices above the windows, with ground-floor cornices featuring pediments and projecting cills incorporating cast iron guards. A run of nine steps, with balustrades, leads to four-panel doors, each topped with a rectangular fanlight (some of which have been blocked) set back behind modified entablature surrounds. The end houses have recessed entrance bays.
