Description
Carisbrooke is a mid-19th century villa located on Upper Tulse Hill. The building is two stories high with a basement and features three windows. It is constructed of stock brick. Paired stucco pilasters extend from the banded basement to the frieze beneath the eaves of the fairly low-pitched hipped slated roof. The sash windows have moulded architraves, with round-headed windows on the ground floor set within stucco panels that include cornices. Access to the villa is via eight steps leading to a half-glazed double door flanked by narrow sidelights and topped with a rectangular fanlight. The entrance is sheltered by an enclosed porch adorned with Egyptian pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course.
To the left, there is a slightly set back two-story and basement extension that matches the main building's style. The rear elevation features two full-height canted bays, one located at the end of the projecting left wing. On the right side, an ornamental cast iron loggia showcases twisted columns with leafy capitals, pointed arches decorated with chevron moulding, and patterned spandrels, topped with an ogee lead roof. Twelve steps lead up to the loggia, featuring a patterned handrail that matches the railing of the loggia, all supported by similar twisted columns. Inside, there is a double Corinthian screen in the hall.
