Description

The Church of All Saints, built between 1888 and 1891 by Fellowes Prynne, is a Grade I listed building located on Rosendale Road. It features red brick construction with stone dressings and a high-pitched slated roof. The nave is designed in a 13th-century style, although the planned western bays and tower were not completed. The nave flows directly into the chancel, which has a modern fleche on the roof ridge. The church has aisles beneath separate gabled roofs, with a double chancel aisle on the north side. An external ambulatory encircles the apsidal east end, giving it a French appearance, which is further emphasized by a round tower with a conical roof located against the north aisle.

On the south side of the chancel, an external staircase leads over the ambulatory to entrances at both first-floor level and halfway up. The interior is finished in red brick, accented with yellow brick and stone dressings. The arches of the three-bay arcade feature cut brick nailhead ornamentation supported by new red sandstone piers. The roof has a lobed section with a wall plate above the coved upper clerestory wall. The Lady Chapel in the north chancel aisle includes an apse and ambulatory, similar to the chancel. A very tall traceried stone chancel screen is present, along with other wrought iron screens, including a high trellis that supports rood figures.
