Description

No 1 Wheatsheaf Lane, formerly known as Morton's Paper Warehouse, is a building dating from 1896 that served as the former Wheatsheaf Hall, a Congregational mission hall. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has tiled roofs. The building features a two-storey irregular left section with three bays, which includes two ground floor entrances set diagonally beneath an overhanging first floor. The windows are grouped casements with alternating block stone jambs. On the first floor, there is a central window with round headed lights, topped by a raised stepped parapet that breaks the eaves. The entrances are adorned with moulded four-centred arches.

To the right, there is a round tower with a conical roof, which has six single round headed lights on each floor. The main block has a rounded left end with another conical roof. Set back to the right, there is a smaller round tower featuring a doorway flanked by red brick columns that support a stone shouldered lintel. A screen wall on the left side includes a 4-centred arched yard entrance with wrought iron gates.
