Description

The decorative column on the west side of Kennington Park was formerly a fountain, which was showcased at the International Exhibition in 1869. The bowl was removed due to damage from the war. This decorative feature is made of pale terra-cotta and is stamped Doulton, Lambeth. It stands on a square plinth, with a squat round column supporting a taller, slimmer column. Both columns are richly decorated with fluting and intricate leafy and classical ornamentation. At the top, there is a small platform that holds a sculptured family group, created by G. Tinworth, depicting a man, a wife carrying a baby, and a child, symbolizing "The Pilgrimage of Life."
