Description

The First World War memorial at the Church of St Mark in Kennington was erected in 1921. It is made of granite and is located to the west of the church, which is also a Grade II*-listed building, within a landscaped area near the Grade II-listed walls and piers surrounding the churchyard.

The memorial features a tall Latin cross with a tapering shaft that rises from a high square plinth. The plinth has a tapering cap with a cornice underneath, and each face includes a band along the top with a stone panel displaying inscriptions and names in raised, leaded lettering. Engaged columns are inset at the corners of the plinth. This plinth rests on a square block with pairs of corbels attached to each face, which sits atop a moulded foot that has projecting rectangular blocks at the center of each side. The entire structure is elevated on a three-stepped base.

The main inscription is on the west face and reads: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD/ AND IN/ HONOURED/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN/ FROM THIS/ PARISH AND/ NEIGHBOURHOOD/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ 'MAY WE IN/ FAITH AND/ HONOUR KEEP/ THAT PEACE/ FOR WHICH/ THEY PAID'." The names of the fallen are listed in columns on the other three faces, with additional names inscribed on the block beneath.

A further inscription runs along the band around the top of the plinth. The west face states "I AM THE," followed by "RESURRECTION" on the south face, "AND THE LIFE" on the east face, and "ST JOHN XI.25" on the north face. Both the east and west faces of the band also feature a raised, leaded cross pattée symbol.
