Description
The Church of St Mark, located on Kennington Park Road, was built between 1822 and 1824 by D. R. Roper, based on the design by A. B. Clayton. This Greek Revival church is constructed from sandstone and features a Portland stone tetrastyle Doric porch set in antis, which is accessed by eight steps. Above the pediment, there is a square tower topped with an octagonal drum and an open round Ionic stage, all adorned with acroteria. The church has a single entrance beneath a small window leading to the narthex, and it expands outward to accommodate aisles. The five-bay returns are fitted with segment-headed windows on each floor, and pilaster bay divisions support an entablature. There are side entrances to the narthex and additional crypt entrances further east. The eastern side of the church projects and includes a large window. Inside, there is a gallery supported by Doric columns around three sides. The aisles and galleries were walled off during reconstruction after war damage, but a screen of two tall Ionic columns remains in front of the east window. The church also features a central glass dome and contains a 17th-century pulpit from St Michael, Wood Street.
