Description

The Royal Crescent comprises a row of six houses built in 1846 as part of a larger, sweeping crescent. They are constructed of stucco and form a significant group value with numbers 23-44. The houses are three storeys high, with an attic and basement. Each house is two windows wide. The ground floor is rusticated. A fluted Doric columned porch with a three-light sash window is situated on the ground floor, approached by steps. A triglyph frieze and mutules run along the façade, above which are iron railings extending along a stone-based balcony. The first-floor windows are square-headed with architraves, friezes and cornices, while the second-floor windows are similarly treated, but with cornices resting on brackets. A dentil cornice sits above the second floor, overhanging a stucco-faced attic with windows set in band surrounds. A cornice and blocking course complete the exterior. Cornices are missing from some of the houses. The ends of the crescent feature round towers with inset round towers above the attic.
