Description
The monument to Ann Gardner and her family, located in Kensal Green Cemetery, is a complex and unusual structure dating from the 19th century. It features a tall, slightly tapering shaft made of pink Peterhead granite, which stands on a stepped base of granite and limestone adorned with a foliate swag. At the top of the shaft is a draped urn positioned on a tall plinth, which is decorated with anthemion acroteria and downward-gazing putto's heads. Flanking the shaft are two seated angelic figures carved from Portland stone, both with wings and dressed in flowing garments. The figure on the left is veiled, holding an extinguished torch and a scroll that it appears to be reading by touch, while the figure on the right reaches upwards, seemingly beckoning. Both figures and the shaft rest on a square base embellished with wreaths. In front of the monument is a curved granite ledger, and the entire structure is set on a shallow, rectangular sandstone base. The leaded inscriptions on the shaft and ledger commemorate Ann Gardner, who died in 1846, along with various members of her family.
