Description
The tomb of Howe Browne, Second Marquess of Sligo, who died in 1845, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a marble sarcophagus set on a base. The rectangular chest rests on two supports and is elevated above a two-stepped base. The sides of the tomb include a sunken inscription panel that is flanked by slender amphorae in relief, and it is topped with a shallow pyramidal cover.
Howe Browne was known for his connections to the Prince Regent and Lord Byron, and he was the excavator of the Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae, which is now housed in the British Museum. He also served as Governor of Jamaica, where he was involved in the emancipation of slaves. His tomb reflects his appreciation for classical antiquities.
