Description
No. 46 Kensington Court is a former electricity generating station built in 1888, possibly designed by J J Stevenson. The building stands three storeys tall and is constructed of red brick, featuring stone string courses, corbels, and other decorative details. Brick pilaster strips separate the bays at the first and second floor levels. Terra-cotta panels are located in the pediment above the main entrance and in the end bays at the second floor level. A stone plaque above the main entrance is inscribed with the words 'Electric Lighting Station'. The original generating equipment was designed and installed by Colonel Compton, a pioneer in the field, and the building served as a generating station from 1888 to 1900. It is listed for its historical significance as one of the earliest surviving electricity generating stations.
