Description

This building at 9 Young Street is a club, offices, and living accommodation, originally designed as a solicitor's office with a shop on the ground floor. It was built in 1905 by Frank Chesterton for the solicitor Ernest Bird, with construction carried out by T H Adamson of Putney. Leaded glasswork was provided by Wainwright and Waring, and the plasterwork was done by G and A Brown Ltd. The building is in the Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of red "Lawrence" bricks with Portland stone dressings and a tiled roof, featuring tall brick and stone stacks at the ends. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a symmetrical facade of two windows. A central gable has a leaded light casement, flanked by dormers with 12-pane sash windows. The first and second floors feature paired, three-light curved bays with mullioned transoms and leaded lights. Leaded rainwater heads are dated 1905. A central wrought-iron shop sign is present. The ground floor has a modillion cornice, and a round-headed doorcase on the left side with a cornice on brackets and pilasters, leading to a door with five deeply fielded panels and a semicircular fanlight. The shopfront includes three further round-headed openings and three later 20th-century glazed doors.

Inside, the ground floor left side has a tessellated floor. A straight flight staircase features original balusters. The first floor has a hardwood and glazed screen, a gated reception area, and Ernest Bird's office with decorative plasterwork. The residential accommodation above retains original features, including fireplaces.
