Description
The tomb of George Smyth, 7th Viscount Strangford, who died in 1857, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a Gothic canopy made of Portland stone that covers a sandstone slab. The tomb is adorned with Carrara marble angels created by Edward Physick. Each side has two cusped arches supported by sandstone colonnettes, with drip-moulds above. The corners are topped with crocketed finials. An inscription on the north end commemorates Percy, the 8th and last Viscount Strangford, who died in 1869. George Strangford was a Tory Member of Parliament and a notable figure in the Young England movement, and he is thought to have inspired the character in Disraeli's novel "Coningsby."
