Description
The tomb commemorates Sir Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849), his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), and other members of the Brunel family. It was designed by Sir Marc Brunel and is made of rectangular blocks of Carrara marble with raised lead letters. Sir Marc is recognized for engineering the Rotherhithe tunnel, his work in steam navigation, and improvements at Liverpool and Chatham docks. His son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is famous for his designs of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Great Eastern Steamship, and the Great Western Railway. Both Sir Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel are regarded as some of the greatest engineers of the 19th century.
