Description
Aubrey House is a mid-18th century house, likely dating from around 1730 to 1740. It is constructed of brown brick with red window arches. The main central block is three storeys and five windows wide, with two-storey, three-window wings, possibly added slightly later, flanking it. Modern additions are present to the east. The central section features a dentilled brick cornice and parapet, with a dentilled brick pediment over the three-window portion, which projects slightly. A band runs between the ground and first floors. The doorcase has a dentilled pediment and entablature above Tuscan pilasters. The east wing projects slightly, with a band across the front continuing that of the main block. The west wing has been enlarged and altered in the 19th century. The rear garden elevation mirrors the front, with the central three-storey section projecting slightly and the wings aligned with the main block; the top floor is set within the parapet, with a brick cornice below. Original cased window frames remain in the first-floor windows on the front. To the extreme east, beyond the modern additions, a 19th-century Tuscan loggia is situated on the garden front. The interior is reported to incorporate earlier features, but retains little original detail beyond some simple mid-18th century pedimented door surrounds. The staircases are of 19th-century design. The house stands in very good grounds, particularly at the rear.
