Description

A block of flats built around 1913 by Clifton R Davy for Baron Arild Rosenkrantz, a Danish stained glass designer, and constructed by R Dixon. The building is red brick with stone dressings and a tiled roof, featuring tall brick chimney stacks with cornices on the gable ends and a projecting eaves cornice. Designed in a stripped Classical Mannerist style, the building has eight windows and is arranged over three storeys. The outer bays project forward and above the eaves, finishing with a narrow stone cornice. They have moulded angles and moulded stone doorcases with lugged entrances and overlights protected by cast-iron guards displaying the numeral "V". The entrances incorporate panelled and part-glazed doors with iron guards. Above each entrance are paired metal-framed casements under gauged brick flat arches on each floor. The right-hand window above the left-hand door contains stained glass. A central recessed bay is stone-faced up to ground-floor cill height. Each floor of this bay features four paired metal-framed windows under gauged brick flat arches with stone keystones. A rainwater head displaying the initial "R" and a rectangular profile downpipe are located on the right-hand side. The interior has not been inspected. Rosenkrantz is recognised for his Art Nouveau stained glass work, notably the east window at Wickhambreux church in Kent (1896), which was among the first in Europe to use American opaque glass developed by John La Farge and others.
