Description
Numbers 7 to 23 (odd) Copenhagen Street consist of nine terraced houses, with number 23 also containing a shop. They were built in the 1820s and 1830s, with the shopfront at number 23 being reconstructed in the 20th century, replacing an earlier mid-19th century one. The houses are constructed of yellow and brown stock brick with banded stucco to the ground floor, and have roofs hidden behind a parapet. Brick party-wall stacks rise above the roofline. The design follows a side-hall entrance plan with a staircase.
The houses are three storeys high with a basement, each featuring two windows, with numbers 13 to 23 slightly projecting. Number 11 has round-arched ground-floor openings. Numbers 13 to 21 have elliptical-arched doorways and segmental-arched ground-floor sash windows. A low flight of steps rises to the entrance in the right bay; doorways have fluted quarter-column jambs (numbers 7 to 9 have panelled pilasters, and number 21 has altered jambs), supporting a corniced head, panelled door (20th-century doors to numbers 13 to 21), and rectangular overlights (numbers 7 to 9), variously patterned (numbers 11 & 19), curved and radial (number 17), stucco (numbers 13-15) and plain (number 21) fanlights. The ground-floor windows are sash windows with 6/6 glazing (numbers 7 to 13 & 17, with margin lights), and a 1/1 sash window, dating to the 20th century, at number 21. Number 23 has a shopfront with a recessed central glazed door, flanked by projecting panelled bay windows, each with four lights. Pilasters support a curved fascia and cornice. Gauged brick arches feature above the upper-floor windows.
The first-floor windows are full-length 6/6 sash windows, with a stucco sill band, and individual iron balconies (the balconies at numbers 9 and 23 are missing). The iron railings of the balconies are decorated with Vitruvian scroll and anthemion motifs (numbers 7 & 17-19) or trefoil and Gothic arch motifs (numbers 11-15). The second-floor windows are mostly 6/6 sashes (numbers 7 to 15), with 3/3 sashes (numbers 17-19), an 8/8 sash (number 21), and a 3/6 sash (number 23). The plain parapet is topped with stone coping, with a wide stucco band to numbers 7 to 9. Attached cast iron area railings feature urn finials. These railings are of group value.
