Description
Numbers 34-39 are a group of terraced houses built around 1841 by William Watkins. They are constructed of yellow brick set in Flemish bond, with stucco detailing and a roof that is obscured by a parapet. The houses rise four storeys over a basement and feature two windows each, forming a symmetrical arrangement with the end houses slightly recessed.
The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor showcasing banded rustication. There are steps leading up to a round-arched entrance, which has a doorcase with reeded pilasters (except for number 39), a cornice with a fanlight, and decorative glazing on numbers 34-35, 37, and 39. The panelled doors are of original design, except for number 39.
The first- and second-floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, and there is a continuous bracketed balcony with iron railings on the first floor, along with window guards on the second floor. A cornice with a blocking course is present at the sill level of the third-floor windows, which are round-arched with gauged brick heads. The parapet completes the design. The sashes are of original design, featuring arched glazing bars on the ground floor, except for numbers 34 (third floor), 37 (ground floor), 38 (third floor), and 39. Number 36 has been rebuilt. The area is enclosed with cast-iron railings.
