Description

A row of twelve terraced houses was built around 1817-1822, with number 38 possibly rebuilt in the 20th century. The houses were designed by James Goulden, a builder. They are constructed of yellow and brown stock brick, with a banded stucco ground floor. The roofs are of Welsh slate, with brick stacks originally serving as party walls, although these are missing from numbers 34 and 36. The houses have a side-hall entrance and staircase layout, each with three storeys, a basement and attic dormers, and two windows. The ground-floor openings are segmentally arched. Low steps lead to the entrances, which have been altered at the end houses. The doorways feature fluted columns, modillioned cornices, and 3-panelled doors with fanlights; the fanlights on numbers 18-24, 30 and 36 have plain glazing, and number 26 has a patterned fanlight. The windows are largely 6/6 sashes, with curved and radial glazing bars to the ground floor, and gauged brick flat arches above. First-floor windows are full-length sashes with a stucco sill band, and are accompanied by iron-bracketed balconies with cast-iron railings in a Vitruvian scroll and palmette pattern. The houses have plain parapets with stone coping, and attached cast iron area railings.
