Description
23 Carleton Road is a detached house built in the mid-to-late 19th century, likely designed by George Truefitt. The building features yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, accented with red brick and either stone or stucco. It stands three storeys tall and has a four-window range.
The entrance is flat-arched and set back within a two-storey entrance bay on the left side, which projects slightly and is supported by two engaged columns with foliage capitals and a cambered head made of gauged red brick. Above the entrance, there is a round-arched window with a gauged red brick head, and the wall below features courses of red brick.
The main front has a stepped gable topped with a stone ball finial, mirroring the design of the entrance bay. This front section includes a two-storey bay with windows arranged in groups of three, flat-arched with gauged red brick heads and foliage capitals only on the front faces of the dividing piers. The building also displays dentil brickwork along the coped parapet, which is adorned with decorative scrolled ironwork.
On the second floor, the windows are flat-arched and set back beneath a round arch made of red and yellow gauged brick, with the tympanum featuring gauged red herringbone brickwork. The crow-stepped gable consists of two stages, the first with five steps and the second with seven, each stage topped with ball finials, and there is an oddly shaped finial at the apex. The house also includes a side stack.
