Description

This detached house was built between 1856 and 1861 as part of the Highbury New Park development, commissioned by Henry Rydon and likely designed by Charles Hambridge. It is constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with red brick dressings, stucco details, and a slate roof. The house is three storeys high, with a basement, and has a four-window front, although one-window recessed wings flank the sides.

A round-arched entrance is located on the recessed left-hand wing, featuring a moulded stucco architrave, cornice, fanlight, and an original panelled door, all sheltered by a round-arched porch with a brick header of alternating red and yellow bricks. The ground floor features alternating bands of red and yellow brick, rising to an impost band where the bricks are angled. The ground-floor windows are round-arched with alternating red and yellow brick headers. The first-floor windows are also round-arched and grouped as three on the main front, recessed and set beneath a round-arched stucco arcade of panelled pilasters with foliage capitals and a pointed extrados. A band of encaustic tiles runs below the first-floor windows. A sill band of dentilled brickwork and encaustic tiles is present below the second-floor windows, which are round-arched on the main front and have details mirroring the first floor, with two small gables above. The single second-floor window in the entrance wing has been altered to a flat arch. A cornice of dentilled brickwork and wooden moulding leads to boxed eaves. The roof is hipped, with side stacks.
