Description

This detached house was built in 1856-61 as part of the development of Highbury New Park, likely designed by Charles Hambridge and developed by Henry Rydon. It is constructed of brick, now painted, with stone or stucco dressings, and a slate roof. It is three storeys high with a basement, and has a two-window front. Steps lead to a round-arched entrance within a single-storey, recessed porch to the right. The porch has pilasters, an entablature, a deep cornice, and a blocking course. A string course runs between the basement and ground floor. The ground-floor windows have flat arches, with plain architraves set back between broad pilasters. These pilasters feature lion's head ornaments and foliage drops in inset panels, with a Vitruvian scroll and lion's head apron. The pilasters also support an entablature at the level of the first-floor window sills. The first-floor windows have basket arches and panelled pilaster architraves supporting consoles, a pediment, and a Vitruvian scroll frieze with lion’s heads. A further string course is present, above which the second-floor windows are basket-arched with cable moulding to the architraves and keystones. These windows are set within recessed panels between broad pilasters with lion’s heads and foliage drops. The building has a modillion cornice extending to boxed eaves, and a hipped roof with side chimneys, one of which has been truncated. A two-window, three-storey wing is set back to the right, and a single-window wing is set back to the left.
