Description
Numbers 61, 63, 63A and 63B, along with the associated wall and gate piers to Highbury New Park, are a group of semi-detached houses dating from 1856 to 1861. They were developed by Henry Rydon and likely designed by Charles Hambridge. The houses are constructed of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with stucco detailing and roofs of Welsh slate.
The properties are four storeys high, with a basement, and feature two windows each. The basement and ground floors are stuccoed. A flat-arched entrance, recessed between the houses and on two storeys, is accessed by steps. It features a cornice, overlight, and a panelled door of original design, flanked by pilasters supporting an entablature. Ground-floor windows have flat arches with panelled pilasters, while first-floor windows are embellished with moulded stucco architraves, panelled aprons, and consoles supporting scrolled pediments. A sill band defines the second-floor windows, which are also flat-arched with moulded reveals. A stucco frieze runs across the facade, interrupted by the windows, and is topped by an eaves cornice and boxed eaves. The roofs are hipped, with dormers on both houses, and include stacks to the party wall and side. Number 63B is a linked wing with a broad, flat-arched window on the ground floor, flanked by two narrower windows between panelled pilasters, an entablature, and a balustraded cornice.
A pair of stuccoed, panelled gate piers, topped with cornices, support a balustraded wall, although the balustrade is missing from the section relating to Number 61. The houses were developed as part of the Highbury New Park middle-class suburb.
