Description

69 and 71 Highbury New Park are semi-detached houses built between 1856 and 1861. They were developed by Henry Rydon and likely designed by Charles Hambridge. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, with red brick, stone, and possibly stucco dressings, topped with a roof of Welsh and artificial slate.

Each house has three storeys above a basement, featuring three windows. There are steps leading up to the entrance, which has a stilted pointed-segmental arch, a cornice, and an overlight. The archivolt, which may be made of stone or stucco, is set within a panel of gauged red brick that rises from a brick impost band connecting the entrance to the two ground-floor windows, which are similarly detailed.

The first-floor windows are round-arched, with foliage imposts, gauged brick heads, and flush archivolts with pointed extrados. The second floor features four linked windows with chamfered brick mullions and wedge lintels, likely made of stone, with the chamfer stop in the stonework. There are brick dentils along the boxed eaves, and the hipped roof has stacks on the party wall and sides. The stack on the side of No. 69 is truncated, while No. 71 has stacks with oversailing courses.

No. 71 has a basement and ground floor wing added to the right, probably from the 19th century, featuring a canted bay on both storeys and stilted segmental-arched windows with foliage imposts on the ground floor, likely of brick and stone but now covered in stucco. The parapet has trefoil ornamentation. The houses are included for their group value.
