Description

Numbers 34-40 form a group of terraced houses built around 1845 in Islington. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some areas rendered in stucco. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and typically has two windows facing the street. The end houses in the terrace project slightly, creating a symmetrical appearance.

The basement and ground floors are stuccoed. The ground floor of numbers 37 and 39 has a decorative pattern of banded rustication, while the others have a smooth finish with faint markings that suggest an intention to appear as ashlar. Steps lead to a segmental-arched entrance with a moulded stucco architrave. Simple door surrounds are present, along with overlights. Numbers 34 and 40 have side entrances with original panelled doors. The ground-floor windows are round-arched, while the upper-floor windows have flat arches and moulded stucco architraves. A cornice and iron balconies are incorporated into the first-floor windows. Original sash windows are present throughout, with radiating glazing bars on the ground floor of numbers 34 and 36, the first floor of numbers 37 and 38, the first and second floors of number 39, and the ground and first floors of number 40. A moulded stucco cornice and blocking course sits atop the building. Chimney stacks are visible between the party walls. Original cast-iron railings are present to the area.
