Description
This building, at 9-13 Cowcross Street, is a workshops or warehouse constructed in 1878. It is built of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stone dressings and red and blue brick detailing. The building is four (possibly five) storeys high with a five-window facade. The design creates a grid-like appearance with large, flat-arched windows on the first, second, and third floors, separated only by narrow bands of stone. Decorative metal bosses are present on all floors and in each bay. The ground floor features pilasters of blue and red brick, with a flat-arched entrance on the left and a segmental-arched entrance on the right, both with gauged brick surrounds. A decorative tiled frieze is preserved in the central bay. Piers of yellow brick, with superimposed red brick pilasters, divide the upper floors vertically, culminating in foliage capitals at the third floor level. Moulded stone lintels are found on each floor. A pointed arch, constructed with alternating red and yellow brick voussoirs and a hoodmould, marks the ‘fourth’ floor, with terracotta roundels set within the spandrels. The building is topped by a parapet.
