Description
The Hope Public House is a late 19th-century public house, likely purpose-built, located on Cowcross Street in Islington. It features white brick set in Flemish bond, with stone and tile dressings, and a roof that is obscured by a parapet. The building has four storeys above a basement and a four-window range. The ground floor may date from around 1900 and has a base of black polished granite with pilasters on either side that support consoles and pedimented brackets, along with a fascia and cornice. The pub's frontage is finely recessed, made of wood and glass, with flat-arched entrances on either side featuring woodwork in the Queen Anne style. These entrances have semi-circular archivolts with faceted glazing and panelled doors. The central bay window is curved at the corners and at the top, showcasing original faceted glass in the archivolt. The entire frontage is topped by a slim wooden arch with glazed spandrels at the corners. The panelled doors have faceted and lettered glass for the former Saloon Bar and Public Bar, and the external side walls are adorned with glazed and moulded tiles.
The upper floors have flat-arched windows with stone lintels, recessed under a continuous brick arcade that is round-arched on the first floor and segmental-arched on the second and third floors. The tympana on all floors and imposts on the third floor feature incised ornament. The second-floor windows have small projecting balconies and large paterae at the imposts, while the third-floor windows have a sill band of encaustic tiles. The cornice is missing, and there is a plain brick parapet at the top. Inside, the late 19th-century bar front includes a stretch of glazed and moulded tiles on the dado of the south wall, with three panels of decorative mirror glass above that carry a painted monogram, either TH or HT.
