Description
This is a row of late 18th-century terraced houses with shops, located on Compton Street. They are built of brown and yellow brick, with the roofs hidden behind parapets. The houses comprise three storeys, numbers 72 to 76 each having one window, and number 77 having two. The ground floors are occupied by shops, each with different details: number 72 has pilasters and consoles supporting a dentil cornice to the fascia; number 73 features pilasters supporting a fascia with egg-and-dart moulding above and a deep cornice; numbers 74 and 75 have pilasters and consoles supporting a cornice; and number 76 has consoles and a cornice. The upper floors have broad segmental-arched windows with gauged brick heads, except for number 77, which has cambered arches. The windows on the upper floors are tripartite on number 72, and generally arranged in groups. There is a parapet to the tops of the buildings and some chimney stacks are located within the party walls between the houses.
