Description
No. 193 on St John Street is a former distillery building, now used as offices. It was likely constructed between 1874 and 1875 for Nicholson's Distillery. The building features stone facing on the basement and ground floor, with yellow brick and stone dressings above. It has four storeys over a basement and a ten-window range.
The ground floor is divided into four bays on the left and five on the right of a central round-arched gateway, which has moulded imposts and an archivolt. Rusticated piers support an entablature. The four bays to the north have segmental-arched openings leading to the basement and flat-arched windows on the ground floor with moulded arrises, while the remaining bays have been altered.
On the first and second floors, there are segmental-arched windows with heads and sides made of white gauged brick. The windows above the gateway are tripartite, and the second-floor windows feature balconies supported by chunky fluted brackets. A dentil cornice runs along the top. The attic storey has flat-arched windows beneath a continuous hoodmould, with a small cornice and coping at the parapet.
Inside, there is a staircase that likely dates from the same period as the building, featuring an open string, cast-iron balusters, and a mahogany rail. The building also includes two basement levels, probably from 1874, supported by cast-iron columns.
