Description

Numbers 1 to 6, 8 to 24A, and the attached railings comprise a terrace of houses built around 1840. The development was undertaken by James Rhodes and constructed by William Beckingham, John Wilson, and Thomas Allen. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with stucco finishes. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. The houses are two storeys high, with a basement, and generally have two windows each, except for number 24A, which has one. The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated by banded rustication. Original panelled doors, some reeded, are found at numbers 1, 2, 8, and 20, accessed via a round-arched entrance featuring pilasters and a fanlight, all topped by a cornice. The ground floor windows are round-arched. A sill band marks the termination of the stucco, above which are flat-arched windows with gauged brick heads. The original sash windows retain radiating glazing bars to the ground floor of numbers 1, 3-6, 13-17, 18 (ground floor), 19, 20 (ground floor), and 22. A stucco cornice tops the building, culminating in a parapet. Chimney stacks are present between the party walls. A Mansard roof, featuring two dormers at number 14, and roof extensions at numbers 1, 18 and 23 are present. Number 24A has been significantly rebuilt. Cast-iron railings are attached to the area.
