Description

8 and 9 Manor Gardens are semi-detached houses that now form part of a health and community centre. They were built in the early 19th century and are constructed from yellow brick set in Flemish bond, with roofs covered in Welsh slate. The buildings rise three storeys over a basement and have a three-window range.

There are steps leading up to a flat-arched entrance located in the slightly recessed outer bay. The entrance features a stucco surround with pilasters, although the entablature is now missing. The doorcase includes panelled pilasters with a cornice, sidelights, and an overlight with decorative glazing, along with panelled doors that retain their original design.

All windows have gauged brick heads; the ground floor windows are round-arched while those on the first floor are flat-arched. Most windows are 6/6 sashes of original design, except for the westernmost first-floor window, which is blank. The ground-floor windows also feature radiating glazing bars. The houses have boxed eaves, a hipped roof with dormers, and stacks at the party walls.

These houses are similar in style to numbers 6 and 7 Manor Gardens and were used for the North Islington School for Mothers starting in 1913. This school was a pioneering organization in voluntary social work within the borough.
