Description
The Owl and Hitchhiker Public House, formerly known as The Edward Lear Public House and previously as the Half Moon Public House, is a public house built around 1860. It is constructed of brick with render and painted stone dressings, topped with a slate roof that features ridge and end stacks. The building stands three storeys high and has a three-window range. The windows are tripartite sashes with elaborate surrounds, featuring both triangular and segmental pediments. The ground floor is arcaded, with ironwork above a recessed entrance. On the second floor, there is a tripartite sash window flanked by two 2/2 sashes, all under segmental heads.
Inside, the layout is open plan, supported by cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals. The bar fittings are elaborately carved and include much engraved glass. There is also a room at the rear that features a recessed niche and a stage.
