Description

The building is a pair of semi-detached cottages with school buildings at the rear, currently used as premises for the London Borough of Islington Social Services. They were built in the mid-19th century, although the school is likely of a later date than the cottages. The cottages are constructed of white brick laid in Flemish bond, with stone dressings, while the school buildings are made of yellow and brown brick, topped with slate roofs.

The cottages are one and two storeys high, featuring a two-window range facing St John's Grove, while the school buildings have a seven-window range to the east. The cottages exhibit a Gothic style, characterized by projecting gabled end bays on St John's Grove, a Tudor-arched entrance on the side, and a canted single-storey bay next to it. The ground-floor windows are flat-arched with rectilinear tracery, except for the innermost window facing St John's Grove, which has three flat-arched lights with sashes. Above these windows, there is a frieze inscribed with 'ST JOHN'S NATIONAL SCHOOLS'. The first-floor windows are flat-arched and come in one, two, and three-light configurations with trefoiled tracery, all set in full dormers except for those in the gabled bays. The cottages also feature stacks on the party wall with panelled chimneypots and additional stacks on the ridge.

The school building consists of four parts: a two-storey wing behind the cottages with flat-arched studio windows on the first floor; a single-storey wing with pointed-arched windows in full dormers, featuring Y-tracery; a gabled cross-wing to the south with similar Y-tracery windows; and a shorter, parallel cross-wing further south. All gables are adorned with billets along the raking cornices.
