Description

The former Notting Warehouse, also known as the Enterprise Printing Machine Works, is a building dating from 1877, designed by builder Edward Walker for William Notting, a typefounder and printing engineer. It is constructed of buff stock brick in English bond, featuring red brick decorative banding and terracotta dressings, with a roof obscured by parapets. The building is a narrow double-fronted block with a central carriageway, while the structures behind, originally for stabling, have been largely demolished and rebuilt in the 20th century by architect Piers Gough.

The warehouse is four storeys tall, with an attic, and has a seven-window range arranged as 1:1:1:2:1:1:1. Its symmetrical facade is characterized by robust brick detailing, full-height piers, and tiers of segmental casement sashes with panels below. The third floor features brick-pedimented sashes with decorative terracotta tympana. The right end of the building has later extensions that match the original style and materials but were altered in the 20th century.

Inside, the building retains timber floors and joists supported by a series of simple iron pillars, with an off-centre reconstructed staircase. Historically, William Notting was a significant figure in the London printing trade, having taken over the business of Henry Watts. He was previously located in Type Street, Finsbury, before moving to premises off Ray Street in 1872. In 1877, he purchased the land and constructed this warehouse, which was described as a five-storey warehouse with stabling, a cart house, and a meeting house.
