Description
The School Keeper's House at Kingsway College Clerkenwell Centre is a former chief warder's house of the Middlesex House of Detention, constructed between 1845 and 1847 by William Moseley. It is located at the south-west corner of the former prison yard. The building is made of brick covered with stucco facing the school yard, while the rear is brown brick set in English bond. It features a hipped roof made of Welsh slate and stands three storeys tall with a two-window range on the north side. The west bay projects significantly.
The entrance is segmental-arched, with a panelled doorcase and fanlight above. A stucco storey band runs between the ground and first floors, and there are stucco sill bands on the first and second floors. All windows are flat-arched; those on the ground floor have chamfered reveals, while those on the upper floors have moulded architraves and cornices on the first floor. There is a two-storey bay on the west wing and a moulded eaves cornice. Stacks are located at the south-east and south-west corners. The rear elevation, facing Sans Walk and Clerkenwell Close, is a blank brick wall that steps slightly in at the plinth level and between the ground and first floors.
